-closed-door meeting at the white housed to between all the key players. the president, the vice president, the treasury secretary, and all four congressional leaders. huddled together with just four days to go before we all go over the fiscal cliff. that meeting lasted for an hour and five minutes. now on a story where every second and every maneuver counts let's get right to chief white house correspondent increase ka yellin. the president says he's modestly optimistic but he also presented a backup plan. does the president really think it will come to that? >> at this point, no. they don't. because the white house is hopeful, first of all, that the agreement that the senators are working on can actually move forward after the meeting here. there is a modest uptick in enthusiasm about that possibility. but as for the backup plan, there's no real likelihood that would ever come to a vote. because republicans would likely block it in both the senate and it would likely not come to a vote in the house. so that's really more rhetoric than it is reality and we have to hope for optio

in the corridor of the mall in the hallway and other employees who work at kiosks that are throughout the middle of the mall and in to our back room. as these shots were being fired. >> taylor, you have a security gate at the store that you work in. were you able to get that security gate closed and effectively seal off the people who you were able to get in the store? >> i was. actually after we got everybody in to our back room i realized the gate was still open and we needed to close the gate because if the gate is not close wed are still in harm's way. so i had to run back from the safety of our back of our store to shut this gate, which is an automatic gate in which we have to sit and turn a key until it is fully down. i was sitting there closing this gate which takes a gook 45 to 60 seconds, i honestly didn't know where the gunman was coming from, where he was. what he looked like. i was just waiting for him to come in to view and see me, and shoot me. >> so this is all transpiring in the 45 seconds it took for the gate to close. you estimate you were, what, 20 to 40

quiet day here at the white house. publicly, the president has been scarce, no sign of him. behind closed doors, i'm told a few meetings internally, but mostly, relatively quiet. i expect we will see more from the president, perhaps we could even see him publicly tomorrow. perhaps he could even meet with or talk to some of the congressional leaders. the president's role in all of this, he can get each of the leaders to come closer on what the white house believes is already, pretty clearly, the framework for a final deal, and he can also go out and lobby the american people to pressure congress to get something done. again, the democrats are insistent that they have been clear on the outlines of what a deal would look like, to raise taxes on those earning $250,000 and more, and keep them where they are for everyone else. the bottom line, john, is with this little time left, is there anything that's going to avert getting us over -- going over the cliff, and the oddsmakers in washington really feel at this point, probably not, we're probably going over that cliff, john. >> that is n

who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police are not saying at this point if he killed himself. police did say that they did not discharge any of their weapons and yet he was dead on the scene. law enforcement sources also telling cnn that the shooter in this horrible tragedy was dressed in "black battle fatigues an

inside of the mall. look at the scene as police were clearing this mall and evacuating some of the frightened shoppers to safety. many of them holding their hands above their heads and holding their children at the same time. witnesses are describing a scene of complete chaos as the shots rang out near the food court in the mall 3.30 p.m. local time. there are reports that the shooter was wearing a flak jacket and hockey mask as he moved throughout the mall firing an assault rifle. outside of macy's, gunshots echoed where a man was portraying santa clause in the santa village and taking photos with kids an he heard two gunshots and 15 to 16 more and immediately he said he hit the floor amidst all of these kids. the clackamas county sheriff confirmed the gunman was a single shooter, an adult male. there are no details on the motive, possible motives and no information has been released about the two people he killed. 20-year-old taylor gibson works in the mall and she was helping to get people to safety when she heard the terrifying gunshots. she's now live on the phone with us. tay

and threats too, did house speaker john boehner hint ever so slightly at a compromise today that could finally edge us away from the dreaded fiscal cliff? it comes down to tax rates. this is a huge sticking point in the stalled negotiations between the president and mr. boehner. obama says the top rate on household income above $250,000 should rise from 35% to 39.6%. boehner wants the rate to stay at 35% or even lower. but what about meeting in the middle? around 37%? listen carefully to the speaker when he was asked today whether that rate could be the answer to this impasse. >> there are a lot of things that are possible. to put the revenue the president seeks on the table. but none of it's going to be possible if the president insists on his position. insists on my way or the highway. >> you hear what he said? a lot of things are possible. that may not sound like much where you're from, but here in washington, it sounds suspiciously like code for we're making progress. more evidence boehner's democratic counterpart house minority leader nancy pelosi also seems to be softening

with some of nancy's friends at one of her favorite restaurants, a place she went to two or three times a week. it is called my place and i asked them about who was nancy lanza? >> 12 years ago, 12, 15 years ago, met her here in the bar. she would come in and take out food and we got to know each other and with mark and we would talk in the bar and just like clicked. that was it. we started talking and we became good friends. >> got to know her? >> yeah. she was like i said started coming into the takeout area and picking up food and got to know the family pretty with l and very friendly and out going and funny and we took to her, so, yeah, she just became fast friends with us. she did a lot in town and was always on the go. >> how often did she come in? sounds like you know her well. >> two or three times a week. >> two or three times a week. >> for good especially. the bar, not so often, you know. >> tickets for a ball game and boston games and stuff. >> season tickets to the red sox and would invite us or give us her tickets. >> when was the last time she came in. >> i saw her
